Coaching & Accountability

Accountability plays and interesting role in coaching. One presumably seeks out coaching to become more aware, learn and grow. One also presumably desires to be accountable to one’s own standards. In fact, the work of the coach is to assist the client in seeing where they may not be “accounting” for their own limiting thoughts and behaviors. Ultimately, we must hold ourselves accountable for creating the change we seek.

Why then, do we sometimes resist or avoid coaching? One common obstacle to seeking coaching is the fear that perhaps our own faulty thinking and behavior is to blame. We also resist change and discovery because the thought of the unknown itself, is uncomfortable.

Of course, greater awareness and accountability is the pathway to change, freedom, more choices and greater ability to control outcomes. How then, can coaches help clients to see beyond the blame-related connotations that surround accountability to the more promising realities that await them on the other side?
